Births, Deaths and Marriages registers and maintains New Zealand birth, death, marriage, civil union and name change information and provides access to that information by issuing certificates and printouts. The Births, Deaths and Marriages office also appoints marriage and civil union celebrants, and issues certificates of no impediment for people who wish to marry or enter into a civil union overseas.

- births and deaths from 1848 (Maori from 1913)
- marriage from 1854 (Maori from 1911)
- civil union records from 2005
The Birth, Death and Marriage Historical Records website allows searches for historic NZ records for births, deaths and marriages:
- Births that occurred at least 100 years ago
- Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago
- Marriages and eventually Civil Unions that occurred at least 80 years ago
- Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago
