Join the Library
Who can join?
You can join Nelson Public Libraries if:
- You live permanently in Nelson City, Marlborough or Tasman Districts
- You pay rates to Nelson City Council
- You attend an educational institution in Nelson City
You can start your membership now before visiting the library to complete the process.
After signing up, you will be given a temporary number to bring into the library along with ID for personal identification. This just needs to be something with your name on it, e.g. a driver's license or passport, Super Gold card, School ID, or bank card.
If you are under 16, you will need to be accompanied by a guarantor (someone over the age of 16) who must also supply personal ID. If you do not have a guarantor you will be offered a temporary membership instead.
What if I'm just visiting?
If you are in Nelson temporarily or on holiday you are welcome to join our libraries as a temporary member. It is free to join, but you are only allowed two items at any one time. The membership will expire after three months and you must supply personal identification.
Can I just access online resources?
Anyone can join the library from home to access our free online resources including e-books, e-audiobooks and movies. Just select Digital Only Membership when filling out the online form. Take note of your temporary membership number and four-digit PIN as you will need this to sign into our online resources.
Digital memberships are valid for 1 year. There are no ID requirements. If you would like to change to a physical membership at any point, come into the library when we’re next open with your ID and proof of address.
Conditions of Membership
As a library member or as a guarantor, I agree to:

- notify change of address and card loss immediately
- pay upon demand all overdue, damage or replacement charges incurred
- allow my personal information to be used in accordance with Nelson Public Libraries’ Privacy Statement
- comply with Nelson Public Libraries Copyright Policy
