Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2025
Join Nelson Public Libraries 14 – 20 September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). The first seeds of a full week dedicated to Te Reo Māori were planted in 1974. We celebrate its growth and gains 50 years on.
We have several huihuinga (events) on offer at Elma Turner Library. Nau mai, Haere mai.
Weave your story: Tukutuku weaving
Tuesday, 16 September, 3.30 - 4.30 pm
Tukutuku is a traditional Māori artform used for storytelling. This type of weaving is mainly used to adorn the inside walls of wharenui (meeting houses). Like carvings, they convey a complex language of visual symbols. Through mahi tukutuku you can learn the techniques and meanings of some common designs. Suitable for all ages, but children will need to be accompanied by an adult. Bookings on Eventfinda required.
Small Time with a special Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori story
Wednesday, 17 September 2025, 10.30 - 11 am
Small Time sessions are designed for 0-3 year olds and combine songs, rhymes and stories into a free, fun 20 minute programme. This is a great opportunity for toddlers to develop pre-literacy skills and for their adults to meet other parents or caregivers. No bookings required.
Māori Heritage in the Research Room
Wednesday, 17 September, 12.15 – 1 pm
The Māori Heritage collection primarily consists of historic books related to Māori from the Nelson Institute. Items are added to the collection based on their significant heritage or research value, their relevance to Tangata Whenua or Te Tau Ihu iwi, their vulnerability or fragility, or their status as key resources for Māori. Explore the collection and have closer look at some items of significance under the guidance of our Māori Services Library Assistant. No bookings required.
Kēmu, Kōrero, Kapu
Saturday, 20 September, 10 - 11 am
Join our regular Kōrero Te Reo Māori session and play the bilingual boardgame Kaupapa. Use your reo and expand your Māori vocabulary with this fun word description game. All levels welcome from absolute beginner to the more advanced at Kōrero Te Reo Māori. It’s a fun and friendly way to practice te reo Māori with other learners over a cup of tea or coffee. No bookings required.
