The Nelson Institute presents a talk by Warwick Johnston on his book, Amandla ’76, the Soweto Uprising Revisited.

Teaching in Soweto and the June 1976 Uprising is Warwick Johnston’s powerful personal account of teaching at Soweto’s only African Teacher Training College during apartheid. Drawing on his firsthand experiences, Warwick reflects on the challenges facing students and educators, and the dramatic events of the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising, which profoundly affected him, his family, colleagues, and students.
Nelson-born Warwick Johnston is a former teacher, historian, and author of several local history books. He now lives in Richmond, where he continues his interests in local history and genealogy.
